Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, Kolkata, Successfully Treats 44-Year-Old Woman with Lemon-Sized Cancerous Kidney Tumor Using Real-Time Intraoperative Ultrasound
Tumor Weighing 100 Grams and Measuring 3 cm Removed Through Minimally Invasive Surgery
Kolkata : Doctors at Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, Rash Behari, Kolkata, successfully treated a 44-year-old woman by removing a deeply embedded, cancerous kidney tumor located in the interior of the kidney, which made the procedure complex. Dr. Puskar Shyam Chowdhury, Consultant Urology, Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, Rash Behari along with his team removed the tumor which was around 3 cms in size and 100 gms in weight, via a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The procedure lasted for 2 hours and the patient was discharged in stable condition after 4 days.
The patient was initially being treated for a stomach related ailment at another city-based hospital where the ultrasound reports revealed a cystic Kidney tumor embedded deep in the kidney. Unlike typical kidney cancers, this tumor had fluid-filled spaces, which made it crucial to operate it carefully and avoid any ruptures and the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body.
Realizing the complexity of her health condition, she sought a second opinion at Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, where Dr. Puskar Shyam Chowdhury conducted a detailed examination. Dr Pushkar recommended a CT scan, which confirmed the presence of the tumor. Additionally, a CT Renal Angiogram was done to get a clear view of the kidney’s blood supply, helping the surgical team plan the surgery.
Giving details of the case, Dr. Puskar Shyam Chowdhury, Consultant Urology, Fortis Hospital & Kidney Institute, Rash Behari said, “This case was particularly challenging due to the tumor’s location deep within the kidney, which posed a high risk of damage to the organ during its surgical removal. Thus, we decided to undertake a partial nephrectomy – a surgery where only the part of the kidney with the tumor is removed. While such procedures are easier to conduct when the tumor is located on the kidney’s outer surface, in this case, the tumor was deeply embedded, making the surgery more complicated. To overcome this challenge, the surgical team used an advanced technique called intracorporeal perioperative ultrasound. This involves using a small probe (a tube-like instrument with a camera and light at the tip), inserted through cuts in the abdomen to provide real-time images of the organs during surgery, allowing for the precise and safe removal of the tumor. The primary goal was to preserve the kidney while ensuring complete removal of the tumor, which was crucial given the patient’s relatively young age. The intracorporeal perioperative ultrasound played a vital role in ensuring the removal of the tumor without compromising the kidney’s function. This case underscores the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly for those over 40. The tumor, which had been silently growing without symptoms, could have eventually resulted in damaging the entire kidney, had it not been removed on time.”
